ENGINE ROTATES SLOWLY, NOT FAST ENOUGH TO START                 16
1. First check battery, by putting jumper
cables from it to a battery you know is
good , if engine spins normal, then that is
your problem, if not or equipped with
pullrope, if pullrope is hard to pull and you
have overhead valves, you will have to
see shop for adjustment, or engine
kicksback so to speak and snatches rope
from your hand. PHOTO AT RIGHT IS AN
ENGINE WITH O.H.V. OVERHEAD
VALVES,SEE ARROW, A box on front of
engine, valve cover indicates this on your
engine and will be stamped O.H.V.
2.Take spark plug out and spin engine, if it
spins faster, then most likely your starter
is good and valve adjustment is needed,
however if there is no difference the
trouble lies in your starter, or something is
binding your engine, check belts pulleys,
also check oil level, make sure it It's not
extremely overfull.

IF STARTER SPINS, ENGINE DOES NOT TURN

1. Most likely starter gear teeth are
missing or stripped, since gear is made of
hard plastic and over time will wear,
however on some models a steel gear is
used, you cannot change from plastic to
steel however without changing flywheel,
you would have to remove starter to
Change two half inch bolts hold starter to
block, plus a seven sixteenths nut holds
battery cable to starter, once removed, see
top arrow on photo, you would have to
drive out pin with a punch and hammer for
whole starter gear ratchet to come apart.
YOU MIGHT CONSIDER TAKING STARTER
OFF AND TAKING TO SHOP TO HAVE GEAR
REPLACED, AT LEAST SAVING THAT MUCH
IN LABOR. THE GEAR RUNS ONLY
BETWEEN $3.00AND $5.00.
