Most of todays small engines have a pull rope mechanism a lot easier
than the old style to work with. With a little patience replacing the pull
rope can be a common repair. MOST of todays pushmowers come with
some sort of plastic cover to take of to get to the metal flywheel cover
that must be removed.PLASTIC COVER IS CONNECTED USUALLY BY
ONE QUARTER INCH NUTS OR BOLTS.
The metal flywheel cap is held on by three eights or 10mm bolts,
usually there are four, you will see around edge of cap, flywheel cap
will lift straight up and usually oil stick will come with it.

Once the cap is off, you will have
to wind the plastic disc up
clockwise as far as it will go, this
will take several turns.THEN you
will have to attach vice grips, see
small arrow at top, to disc and
metal cap, apply enough pressure
to keep disc from unwinding.
NOTE; Before clamping vice grips
make sure hole in disc lines up
with hole in metal top, see long
white arrow and small orange
arrow,if you have any of the old
rope remaining in disc pull out, by
pulling on knot that you will see
tied.
FEED new rope through metal hole
and through hole in disc, it helps if
you burn the end of the rope with
a lighter to get rid of frazzles. Also
using a piece of wire to help feed
rope through works well, a
staightened metal clothes hanger
works well, see blue arrow.
once you have rope through disc,
tie a knot in the end of it,pull rope
back until knot is tight against disc
and release vice grips, rope
should wind up in disc, and is
ready to install back on engine.

NOTE; I AM USING A PUSH MOWER FOR EXAMPLE, BUT YOUR
GENERATORS, SIDE SHAFT ENGINES, NEWER MODELS HAVE
THIS TYPE OF STARTING MECHANISM, HOWEVER IF YOU HAVE
THE OLD STYLE OR ONE THAT LOOKS DIFFERENT. I
RECCOMEND YOU SEEK SHOP HELP TO INSTALL.
